Description
Mercury, but make it fun! The closest planet to the Sun appears as a drab grey to our eyes. That's not fun for me to paint, so I chose a false-color view from MESSENGER spacecraft images. The colors enhance surface features. Tan areas are ancient volcanic plains, light blue highlights young craters, and dark blue areas are thought to be rich in graphite—a crystalline form of carbon you probably recognize as pencil lead. The large circular feature in the top right is Caloris Basin, a gigantic impact crater 950 miles (1525 km) in diameter. This is a print of a clay disk I painted to look like Mercury.

I do my best to represent my art as accurately as possible. I post unedited photos taken in natural daylight. Actual colors in person may vary due to variances across digital screens and how color is interpreted from person to person.
