Description

A false color view of Jupiter in ultraviolet light from the Hubble Telescope, which takes yearly photos of the gas giants to monitor their atmospheres and changing weather patterns. If you look closely at the southern pole, you'll see a dark spot. Scientists analyzed images from 1994 to 2022 and found these dark ovals occur ~50% of the time in the southern pole. They believe the ovals form from enhanced haze abundance caused by a complex interaction between Jupiter's atmosphere and immense magnetic field. Basically, a giant magnetic tornado is kicking up dust and leaving behind Earth-sized evidence in the form of a dark oval!
