Description

My second semester of grad school a careless driver crashed into my car shattering my foot. I was unable to walk for 6 months. All I could do was stare out the window. I hung bird feeders to help me cope with my situation. An angry orange hummingbird soon took up residence, chasing off every other bird in the area. Growing up in Indiana, I only had ruby-throated hummingbirds with their familiar green bodies and red throats. The sassy little guy with his molten copper gorget was the rufous hummingbird. The beautiful birds of Northern Arizona captivated my heart and helped me learn to walk again. Soon I was holding a field guide, submitting checklists to eBird, and buying fancy binoculars.

Milky Way Mallards reminds us to appreciate the beauty of the natural world. We live on a floating rock in the vastness of space and are fortunate enough to share it with trees, ducks, hummingbirds, and other amazing creatures. Bird watching got me through one of the most difficult moments in my life and continues to be by my side, from finishing my PhD to starting this art business. I hope this painting can encourage you to stop and look at all the beauty on Earth, too.
