Description

W1935 is a cold, lonely brown dwarf. But 47 light years away, it might be putting on a dazzling show. Observations from JWST showed something unexpected—infrared emissions from methane. The upper atmosphere was glowing! The likely explanation is aurorae. That's odd for an isolated brown dwarf without a host star to provide energy, so it's possible what we're seeing is an atmospheric process we don't quite understand yet or the influence of a nearby moon. This piece was inspired by an artist's conception in a 2024 NASA press release (NASA/ESA/CSA; L. Hustak).
